TENNIS STARS PAST AND PRESENT STAR AT QUEENSLAND SPORT AWARDS
Young female tennis stars of 2011 in US Open winner Samantha Stosur and Wimbledon Junior champion Ashleigh Barty have combined with Queensland’s multiple Grand Slam winning sporting legends Rod Laver and Roy Emerson to make it a night to remember for Queensland tennis at tonight’s 17th Annual Queensland Sport Awards Presentation at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre.
In front of a black tie audience of close to 850, Gold Coast based Stosur received the The Courier-Mail Channel 7 Queensland Sport Star of the Year Award while Ipswich teenager Barty received the Coca Cola Channel 7 Junior Sport Star of the Year Award.
Laver and Emerson joined world golfing legend Greg Norman from the USA for tonight’s installation as members of the 1st XI Legends of Queensland Sport in the State’s Sport Hall of Fame, alongside motorcycling’s Mick Doohan, rugby union’s John Eales, athletics’ Catherine Freeman, rugby league’s Wally Lewis and swimming’s Susie O’Neill and Kieren Perkins.
Only cricket’s Allan Border (in South Africa) and horse racing’s the late George Moore were not present for the elevation by Premier Anna Bligh of eleven of Queensland, Australian and world sport’s greatest on field performers.
In a further triumph for tennis, Grand Slam umpire James Tucker was named Queensland Officiator of the Year in the award sponsored by the Queensland Government.
The Bank of Queensland sponsored Queensland Sport Team of the Year Award was won by the Super Rugby title winning Queensland Reds with QRU CEO Jim Carmichael was adjudged the Clubs Queensland sponsored Queensland Sport Administrator of the Year.
The Brisbane Roar coach Ange Postecoglou was named the Queensland Sport Coach of the Year in the award sponsored by the Queensland Government for guiding the Roar from second last in 2009-10 to A-League champions in 2010-11.
Football also provided the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre sponsored Queensland Sport Event of the Year in the thrilling extra time / penalty shootout A-League Grand Final decider in front of over 50,000 at Suncorp Stadium in March.
The Queensland Government also sponsored the Queensland Junior Sport Team of the Year in young Olympic yachting hopefuls Josh Franklin and Lewis Brake while Queensland Service to Sport Awards sponsored by the State Government for outstanding service to Queensland sport went to David Keating, Ken McGuire and Rhonda Nix.
The Courier-Mail PKF sponsored Queensland Sport Athlete with a Disability Award went to runner Rachael Dodds for her T35 gold medal in the 100 metres sprint at the IPC world titles in Christchurch in January while the Brisbane City Council sponsored Queensland Sport Volunteer of the Year was awarded to golf’s Abby Driver.
The annual Queensland Sport Awards are conducted by QSport as the industry peak body for sport and since 2009, incorporates Hall of Fame inductions.
The Awards / Hall of Fame major sponsors are The Courier-Mail, Channel 7 and the Queensland Government, with the last of these the single biggest financial contributor by dint of its contract with QSport for advocacy in sport related issues and its sponsorship of four Award categories and the Hall of Fame.
