PEAK SPORT AND RECREATION BODIES WELCOME NEW FUNDING ARRANGEMENTS

Changes to the range of State Government funded programs for sport and recreation announced by the Hon. Phil Reeves MP, Minister for Sport, have been welcomed by QSport, the peak industry body for sport in Queensland, and its recreation counterpart the Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation (QORF).

QSport CEO Peter Cummiskey said “The Government, in maintaining the financial commitment it gave to the sector in the lead up to last March’s State election, significantly has directed support to engage more resources at local community level.”

“Minister Reeves has delivered on his commitment last July to review existing funding prior to the end of last year and announce changes early this year.”

QORF CEO Donna Little highlighted that sport and recreation bodies at local, regional and State level “have an opportunity to explore how the new suite of programs can assist in: the delivery of increasing participation, including volunteerism; enhancing the capacity of their organisations; and supporting access opportunities by disadvantaged groups.”

“Importantly, the new arrangements extend funding opportunities to not for profit community organisations that deliver active outcomes and were previously excluded, namely Scouts and Guides Queensland.”

QORF and QSport, as the recognised peak bodies, are contracted by the Government to provide advice on the sector’s requirements and were involved in the monitoring of last year’s review.

The new suite of programs will increase job opportunities in the sector and enhance the overall level of community involvement in sport and recreation in the State.
