Mr Roger Gould

One of the Australian Wallabies all-time great fullbacks, he played 25 Tests from 1980-87 and 65 times for Queensland. A big man with the thumping boot, he played all over the world in a career highlighted by the unbeaten Grand Slam Tour of England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland under Alan Jones, when he played in each of the Tests and mercurial five-eighth Mark Ella said of him: “Not only is Roger Gould the best punter of a ball in world rugby he is the best fullback I have ever seen. Roger is just dynamite.” Having made his debut for Queensland aged 20 in 1978, he also starred as Australia’s 1980 Bledisloe Cup win over New Zealand in 1980, and finished against England in the 1987 World Cup. But for persistent injury woes he may have had an even more profound impact. Later he coached his junior club Wests in the Brisbane club competition, was a Queensland Reds assistant-coach in 2001-02, and had a short stint as a Wallabies selector and assistant coach under Eddie Jones in 2004-05.
